A Little Bit of History, and a Lot of Deliciousness

Cookies ’n Cream (top) and Bamm Bamm donuts are among the playful specialty donuts at Eighty8 Donuts in Portland. These are mini-donuts, so you’ll want to sample a few.Diane Bair

If you’re a doughnut lover (or donut — both spellings are correct according to Merriam-Webster), the arrival of autumn means one thing: Apple cider doughnuts. For a true fan though, the doughnut knows no season. It’s a staple. You’ll find a believer in Maine native Kris McClure, who operates the Maine Donut Tour (www.mainedonuttour.com) in Portland. Running from April through October (and by appointment from November through March), the 75-minute tours feature a mile of walking, a little bit of history, and a lot of deliciousness. Count on six samples (not six whole doughnuts) from three top bake shops as you meander the cobblestones. You’ll sample two flavors at each stop, and will likely go home with leftovers.  For full text visit BostonGlobe.com.
